New England Drilling and Rock Splitting Corp. has been serving New England and surrounding areas since 1995. The company was founded by Steven J Ouellette Jr., who after attending Shawsheen Valley Technical High School for computer programming realized that corporate America was not a good fit for him – working outdoors was what he really wanted.
Steven Jr. was introduced to the drilling and blasting industry at a young age by his father who began working for a drilling and blasting company at the age of 18. As a young man, Steven Jr. was given the opportunity to work alongside his father at that same company each summer learning all he could about the drilling and blasting industry.
In 1994, Steven Ouellette Jr. graduated from Shawsheen Valley Technical High School with a diploma in Computer Programming. Following graduation, as he had done in summers past, Steven Jr. went to work for the drilling and blasting company. He worked for the remainder of the year saving as much money as he could. At Christmas of 1994, as a present from his dad, Steven Jr. received a 60-pound rock drill. During the next few months, he continued to work hard saving enough money to purchase a used Ford F-250. He used the Ford
F-250 to build a work truck, marking the beginning of his intention to build his own company.
During the summer of 1995, Steven Ouellette Jr. used every credit card he had available to buy his first hydraulic rock splitter. At that point, he was almost fully equipped. He just needed an air compressor. As luck would have it, his father had a friend who was selling an air compressor – Steven Jr. jumped at the chance to buy it and with that, New England Drilling and Rock Splitting was born.
Steven’s friends and family members were instrumental in the early success of the company. They went out of their way to help him with jobs at night and on weekends. The moonlighting lasted for about another year. During the summer of 1996, Steven made the decision to quit his day job and devoted all of his time to growing his business. He began drilling and splitting rocks full time with the help of his friends and family who continued to help and support him along the way.
In 1997, Steven Jr. made it official and incorporated his name: New England Drilling and Rock Splitting Corporation. During the early years, for Steven Jr., there was no such thing as a 9 to 5 job. Steven Ouellette Jr. worked 18 hours each day, 6 or 7 days every week building his business. Unfortunately, when a customer hits the ledge, the job comes to a stop. Understanding the impact that this has on a project, Steven Jr. spent many of his young years working deep into the nights working as late as the neighborhoods would allow him trying to complete the job, allowing his customers to move forward with their job.
Although he has completed many jobs rewarding jobs, one of Steven’s fondest moments came early in the life of the company – winning the bid to break the ledge for the construction of the Cracker Barrel Restaurant on RT 133 in Tewksbury, Ma. This was a favorite job of his and one of his best memories. He loved drilling under the stars alongside highway 495.
